FAA Starts Charging Fees for Rocket Launches in 2026

Published Date: 4/22/2026

Notice

Summary

Starting in 2026, the FAA will charge fees for commercial space launches and reentries to cover licensing and permitting costs. This affects companies launching or returning spacecraft in the U.S., who will pay based on their payload weight or a set maximum fee. These fees help fund the FAA’s space oversight and start with new license terms this year.

New Per-Launch User Fees Begin 2026

Starting in 2026, companies that perform commercial space launches or reentries in the U.S. must pay a user fee for each launch or reentry under an FAA license or permit. The statutory fee applies to launches and reentries carried out in 2026 and later and will be collected by the FAA.

Fees Calculated by Payload Weight or Cap

Each user fee will be the lesser of two scheduled amounts: a rate assessed per pound of payload weight or a calendar-year maximum fee. FAA will use the smaller of the per-pound amount and the maximum fee to determine what an operator owes for each mission.

Billing, Reporting, and Payment Timelines

Operators must provide the payload weight at least 60 days before each mission; FAA will calculate the fee, issue a fee notification, and operators must pay within 30 days of that notification. FAA intends to issue notifications later in 2026 for fees that accrued since January 1, 2026.
