Miami University intends to return two sacred ceremonial objects to the Native Hawaiian organization Hui Iwi Kuamoʻo. The university says these items are needed by a traditional Native Hawaiian religious leader for present-day religious practice, and repatriation may occur on or after May 26, 2026.
Other groups may request repatriation
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not named in the notice may send a written request to Miami University to claim the items. Requestors must show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are lineal descendants or culturally affiliated, and written requests should be sent to Dr. Richard Page at Miami University (Roudebush Hall, Suite 102, 501 E High Street, Oxford, OH 45056) or the email provided in the notice.
Timing and competing-request rules
Repatriation may occur on or after May 26, 2026. If competing requests are received, Miami University will determine the most appropriate requestor before repatriation, and joint requests are treated as a single request; the university will send a copy of this notice to all requestors and consulting parties.
