Retail Meat Sales Exemptions Get Inflation-Adjusted Dollar Limits
Published Date: 4/28/2026
Notice
Summary
Starting May 28, 2026, retail stores selling meat and poultry to hotels, restaurants, and similar places have new dollar limits to keep their federal inspection exemptions. These limits adjust based on price changes from last year, making sure stores don’t sell too much outside normal retail amounts. If they go over, they lose their exemption and must follow stricter inspection rules.

Meat Sales Exemption Raised
Starting May 28, 2026, the FSIS calendar-year retail dollar limit for meat and meat food products (including Siluriformes fish) is increased to $109,600. Retail stores may sell up to $109,600 of these products to hotels, restaurants, and similar institutions without losing their Federal inspection exemption.
Poultry Sales Exemption Raised
Starting May 28, 2026, the FSIS calendar-year retail dollar limit for poultry and poultry products is increased to $76,100. Retail stores may sell up to $76,100 of poultry products to hotels, restaurants, and similar institutions without losing their Federal inspection exemption.
Exceeding Limits Triggers Inspection
If a retail store's sales of amenable products to hotels, restaurants, and similar institutions exceed either 25 percent of total retail product sales or the calendar-year retail dollar limitation, the store is disqualified from the Federal inspection exemption and must follow inspection requirements. This rule continues to apply with the updated dollar limits.
