Summary

The Department of Labor wants to keep using the Current Population Survey, a monthly check-in with 60,000 households that tracks jobs and unemployment across the U.S. They’re asking for your thoughts before June 29, 2026, to make sure the survey stays clear and easy to answer without wasting time or money. This survey helps everyone understand how Americans are doing in the job market and keeps important economic info flowing.

CPS Keeps Monthly Job Measures

The Current Population Survey (CPS) will continue as the monthly survey of about 60,000 households that provides the only official monthly measures of total employment and unemployment. CPS data feed the monthly Employment Situation news release, which is designated a Principal Federal Economic Indicator and is used by policymakers, the media, and the public to track the job market.

Household Response Time Burden

If your household is selected to respond, BLS expects 492,000 total responses per year (about 41,000 per month), with an average time per response of 8.1 minutes and an estimated total annual respondent burden of 66,420 hours. The Bureau is seeking OMB clearance to continue this level of monthly collection.

Selection Pattern for Respondents

One individual from each selected household is asked to take part in a monthly computer-assisted interview for 8 months during a 16-month period, reporting labor-market activity for the week before the survey. Households are chosen to produce a nationally representative demographic sample.
