Published Date: 5/7/2026

Notice

Summary

The VA is starting a new process to check if homes and lots are good fits for Veterans using Specially Adapted Housing grants. This helps make sure Veterans get safe, accessible homes that match their needs. If you want to share your thoughts, send comments by June 8, 2026—this won’t cost Veterans extra but helps improve the program.

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

VA will assess SAH property suitability

The VA will collect information using VA Forms 26-1858a through 26-1858d to determine whether homes, vacant lots, or housing units are suitable for Veterans using Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grants under 38 U.S.C. Chapter 21 Sec. 2101(a). The VA will use this information to decide medical feasibility of living outside an institution, whether the unit meets the Veteran's disability-based needs, and whether the cost relates properly to the Veteran's present and anticipated income and expenses.

Applicants face time burden to supply property info

People applying for VA property suitability determinations must complete the listed VA forms and provide photos and measurements. The VA estimates 6,628 respondents annually, an estimated annual burden of 2,695 hours, and an average burden per respondent of 15 minutes to complete forms and 45 minutes to take photos and measurements; responses are expected annually.
