New rural price index starting 2026
If enacted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics would publish a monthly Consumer Price Index for Rural Consumers starting January 2026. It would track price changes for what people in rural areas buy. Rural households and small businesses could use it to watch inflation. Policymakers and researchers could use it to inform programs and prices. This index would not, by itself, change taxes or benefit amounts.
