Temporary critical access status for rural hospitals
This bill would let some rural community hospitals get Critical Access Hospital status even if they are too close to another hospital. The exception would last 1 year and would start 6 months after enactment. Only hospitals in Medicare’s rural community hospital demonstration on the enactment date would qualify. The bill would also use the standard Medicare definition of a Critical Access Hospital to avoid confusion. If passed, rural Medicare patients could see steadier local inpatient and outpatient care.
