New Agriculture investigator for meat competition
If enacted, the Agriculture Department would set up a new office to police competition in meat and poultry. The Secretary would appoint a Special Investigator to run it. The Investigator could use subpoenas and bring civil or administrative cases under the Packers and Stockyards Act. The office would work with the Justice Department, the Federal Trade Commission, and Homeland Security on competition and security in the food sector. Small producers could get more help against unfair practices, while larger firms could face more investigations. The office would hire lawyers and experts, and it would start upon enactment.
