Fish tagging to aid Great Lakes fisheries

If enacted, the Fish and Wildlife Service would start a program to mass mark hatchery fish in the Great Lakes. It would buy tags and equipment, run tagging and tag recovery, process and share data, and hire staff. The Service would work with Federal, State, and Tribal fish agencies, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission’s lake committees, and plan signatories. Data would help track results, balance predators and prey, support Tribal, recreational, and commercial fisheries, and check habitat work. The bill would authorize $2.7 million each year for fiscal years 2026 through 2030. The program would start upon enactment.
