National STEM Week for students and families
A federal STEM committee (CoSTEM) would name one week each year as National STEM Week, starting upon enactment. It would consult with schools, colleges, families, and industry groups. CoSTEM would encourage schools and colleges to run events and lessons. Families would be encouraged to try STEM activities at home. STEM employers would be asked to offer mentors, site visits, and talks, and to share funding, resources, or tools. States and local communities would get support to plan and promote their own STEM Week activities. CoSTEM would report to Congress within 1 year and every year after on participation, impact, and ways to improve.
Defines who can join STEM Week
This would define who counts for STEM Week. It would use existing federal meanings for elementary, secondary, and higher education schools. It would define industry partners and leaders that can support events. “State” would include all 50 states plus Puerto Rico, DC, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These definitions would take effect upon enactment.
