Survivor Benefits Fairness Act

Sponsored By: Representative Rep. Steil, Bryan [R-WI-1]

Introduced

Summary

Timing of survivor veterans' benefit reductions. This bill would change when the Department of Veterans Affairs reduces or stops survivors' compensation, dependency and indemnity compensation, and pensions by tying the effective date to the last day of the month in which a marriage, remarriage, or death occurs. The amendment applies to events on or after enactment and shifts only the timing of reductions rather than other eligibility rules.

VA beneficiaries keep payments through event month

This bill would change when VA cuts or stops certain benefits. If a marriage, remarriage, or death happens, VA compensation, DIC, or pension would end on the last day of that month, not the month before. You could keep payments for that month, delaying a cut by up to about one month. It would apply only to events on or after the date of enactment. It would not change long-term eligibility or payment amounts.
