Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Funding for Great Lakes mapping work

If enacted, the bill would authorize $50 million each year for 2025 through 2029 for the mapping effort, $250 million total. Money Congress appropriates could be used through fiscal year 2030. Congress would still need to pass annual funding bills before NOAA could spend the money.

Public high-resolution maps of Great Lakes

If enacted, NOAA would lead a cooperative effort to map the Great Lakes lakebeds in high resolution by December 31, 2030. NOAA would coordinate with Great Lakes states, Lakebed 2030, and other regional systems. During the effort, finished parts would be shared with the public soon after the data are collected. To the extent practicable, within 180 days after completion, NOAA would release the full map and required metadata and add the data to nautical charts and other tools. NOAA would also use existing systems to catalog bathymetric data and store metadata.
