Summary

Creates free counseling for the next of kin and former volunteer caregivers of veterans who die by suicide. This bill would require the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to provide at-no-cost counseling when services are reasonably accessible and match or exceed similar VA services. The VA could contract with federal, state, or private groups and pay them for delivering care. The law would define who counts as next of kin and a former volunteer caregiver and requires the program to begin within 90 days of enactment.

Free counseling for families after veteran suicide

This bill would set up a VA program for free counseling after a veteran dies by suicide. It would cover the next of kin: spouse, child, parent, or sibling; or another closest relative named by VA. It would also cover former volunteer caregivers who were 18 or older, served at least three months without pay, and worked through a covered veterans group. VA could partner with outside providers and pay them, but counseling would be offered only when it is reasonably accessible and meets VA standards. VA would post program details online and share information with eligible people. The program would start no later than 90 days after enactment.
