Phone, online, and office help for Social Security

If enacted, starting on the date of enactment, you would have three ways to apply for Social Security or SSI and manage your case. You could call a toll-free line to ask questions, start or finish applications, and make major account changes like direct deposit, with a representative available during standard business hours. You could also use an online portal to submit and track claims and get updates, or get in-person help at SSA field offices. The phone service would be nationwide, offered in English, Spanish, and other languages, and include identity and security safeguards. Oversight reports would be sent to Congress: an initial report by the Comptroller General within 1 year of enactment, then yearly reports from the Commissioner on usage, wait times, security, barriers, and improvement plans.
