Show full summary
  • Retired peace officers: Retirees rehired as armed school resource officers at elementary or secondary schools would not count that pay as taxable income.
  • Employers and payroll administrators: Companies and school districts would stop withholding federal income and payroll taxes on that excluded compensation.
  • Survivors of officers: School resource officers would be added to the list of eligible positions for Public Safety Officers' Death Benefits, potentially expanding survivors' access to that benefit.

Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Death benefits for school resource officers

The bill would add school resource officers to the federal Public Safety Officers' Death Benefits program. If enacted, survivors could apply for the one-time federal death benefit when program rules are met. Other eligibility rules of the program would still apply.

Tax-free pay for retired school resource officers

This bill would let certain school resource officers exclude their pay from federal income tax. It would also keep that pay from counting for Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes. Employers would not withhold federal income tax on that pay. To qualify, you would need to be a retired peace officer in good standing, employed as an armed school resource officer at an elementary or secondary school. The change would apply only to pay for work done after the bill is enacted.
