No New Burma Funds Act

Sponsored By: Representative Rep. Williams, Nikema [D-GA-5]

Passed House

Summary

This bill would direct the U.S. Executive Director at the World Bank to maintain the Bank’s pause on disbursements and new financing to the Government of Burma. Continuation of that pause is tied to a Treasury Secretary determination that it is in the U.S. national interest, and the measure does not authorize new U.S. funding or require any appropriations.

Keep World Bank pause on Burma funding

If enacted, the Treasury Secretary would direct the U.S. director at the World Bank to keep a pause on disbursements and new loans to the Government of Burma. The pause began after the 2021 military coup. The pause would continue only if the Secretary decides it is in the U.S. national interest. If the Secretary decides it is not, the pause would not continue. This would guide the U.S. vote at the World Bank and would not spend new U.S. money. Most U.S. households would not see a direct budget change.
