Show full summary

  • Families and communities: Low- and moderate-income households could gain more locally funded housing options when CDBG dollars are used for new construction.
  • Local governments and grant recipients: Cities, counties, states, insular areas, and tribal entities would have explicit authority to spend section 106 CDBG funds on building new housing, expanding how existing grants can be used.

Block grants could build low-cost housing

This bill would let cities, counties, states, tribes, and insular areas that receive Section 106 block grants use them to build new homes. The homes would be for low- and moderate-income people. Projects could be done with or without nonprofit partners. This would not add new money; it only expands allowed uses. Whether homes get built would depend on local choices and funding.
