Sponsored By: Representative Rep. McClellan, Jennifer L. [D-VA-4]
Introduced
Summary
Expand VA work-study access for student veterans. This bill would create a five-year pilot to let veterans pursuing rehabilitation, education, or training receive the VA work-study allowance while enrolled at least half-time.
Show full summary
- Veterans: Participants would be eligible for the VA work-study allowance while enrolled at least half-time instead of meeting the current three-quarter-time rule. They would otherwise follow the same program rules as other VA work-study students.
- Department of Veterans Affairs: The pilot could increase pathways from school to VA employment by giving more veterans paid work-study experience and tracking how many get full-time VA jobs.
- Congressional oversight: The Secretary of Veterans Affairs would report within 180 days of enactment and annually on the number of participants, the percentage who obtain four-year degrees, and the number who obtain full-time VA employment.

Work-study pilot for half-time veteran students
If enacted, VA would run a five-year pilot so eligible veteran students could get VA work-study while attending at least half-time. The pilot would drop the usual three-quarter-time rule for these participants. All other VA work-study rules would still apply. VA would also have to report to Congress within 180 days of enactment and each year on how many veterans use work-study, the share who earn a four-year degree, and how many get full-time VA jobs.
