Sponsored By: Representative Rep. Kiley, Kevin [I-CA-3]
Introduced
Summary
Continuation of Housing Choice Voucher assistance across agency boundaries. This bill would require an agency that provides tenant-based housing aid to keep a family's voucher when the family moves outside the agency's area for moves on or after January 1, 2026 unless providing rental aid for the new unit would cost more than 10 percent higher than the cost when the family lived in the original area.

Keep your voucher when moving
If enacted, you would be able to keep your tenant-based (Housing Choice) voucher when you move outside your housing agency's area. This would apply to moves on or after January 1, 2026. Your original public housing agency would have to continue your voucher unless the new rental subsidy is more than 10% higher than your prior subsidy. The cost comparison would use the subsidy the agency paid when you lived in the original area and the subsidy for the new unit.
