Rabbi Michoel Ber Weissmandl Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2026
Sponsored By: Representative Rep. Velázquez, Nydia M. [D-NY-7]
Introduced
Summary
Would award a Congressional Gold Medal to Rabbi Michoel Ber Weissmandl in recognition of his wartime leadership and rescue efforts, including organizing the Working Group, helping the Solomon Schoenfeld Kindertransport, and documenting Auschwitz. The bill records his use of funds and contacts to delay deportations, his translation and addendum to the Auschwitz Protocols, and his postwar work founding the Yeshiva of Nitra in New York. It directs the Secretary of the Treasury to strike the gold medal, allow sale of bronze duplicates at prices that cover production and overhead, and transfer the medal to Samuel Dovid Weissmandl or, if absent, Rabbi Menachem Meir Weissmandl.
