Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

National study on K–12 modeling

If enacted, the NSF Director would seek an agreement within 180 days with the National Academies (or another group if they decline) to study how to put modeling into K–12 education. The study would look at barriers and enablers, teacher preparation gaps, workplace and internship pathways, and ways to communicate with communities. The study must hold at least one public meeting and deliver a final report with findings and recommendations to NSF, the Education Department, and Congress within 24 months of the agreement.

Grants to modernize K–12 math

If enacted, the NSF would run a competitive grant program to help public K–12 schools teach mathematical and statistical modeling. The bill would authorize $10 million per year for those grants for FY2026–2030, and money would only be available if Congress appropriates it. Grants would require partnerships with school districts, researchers, and communities and must include outcome-focused evaluation plans; NSF would publish results and report portfolio findings to Congress. The authority to make new awards would expire on September 30, 2029.
