New USDA office for biotechnology policy
If enacted, the Department of Agriculture would create an Office of Biotechnology Policy led by a Director who reports to the Secretary. The office would develop and coordinate USDA policy on biotechnology, biomanufacturing, synthetic biology, research, labeling, commercialization, and trade. It would help other USDA offices meet biotechnology responsibilities and lead coordination with EPA, FDA, and state agencies. The office would consult with biotech developers, academics, and agricultural producers. The bill would also clarify that the Secretary has the authority to establish and run this office.
