A resolution designating April 2026 as "National Native Plant Month".
Sponsored By: Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith
Passed Senate
Summary
National Native Plant Month designates April 2026 to spotlight native plants and recognize their environmental and economic benefits. Native plants are species that evolved in local regions and include more than 17,000 trees, shrubs, grasses, perennials, vines, and wildflowers in the United States. They clean air, filter water, stabilize soils, and provide food and shelter for butterflies, caterpillars, birds, bees, and other wildlife in ways non-native plants often cannot. More than 200 native plant species have been lost since the early 19th century because of habitat loss and degradation, extreme weather, and invasive species. The resolution recognizes native plants as essential to resilient ecosystems and to the nation’s natural heritage.
