Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Higher costs when sheriff collects taxes

The law sets fees for sheriff distress warrants. You pay $22 to issue each warrant and $1 if a levy happens. You also pay mileage at the rate in section 33-117 for miles actually traveled. If several warrants are served on one trip, the miles are split among them. If your taxes are collected by distress and sale, the sheriff also takes a commission: 10% on the first $500 and 8% above $500. All fees, mileage, and commission are added to your tax bill and collected like the tax.

Mileage charges in sheriff tax collections

The law sets how mileage is handled in tax collection. If taxes are not collected by distress and sale, the sheriff’s mileage is paid under section 33-117. When the tax is later collected with fees and commission, the mileage you pay goes to the county treasurer and into the county general fund.
