Hospitals must post and honor patient rights
Vermont adopts a Bill of Rights for Hospital Patients. Hospitals must give you a clear summary of your rights at admission and post it at each nurse’s station. The notice lists phone numbers and addresses for the licensing agency, the Office of Professional Regulation, and the Board of Medical Practice. If staff violate these rights, licensed providers can face discipline. You can file a complaint with the proper board based on the provider’s license.
More attending provider choices in hospitals
If you are admitted to a Vermont hospital, you have a named attending provider. It can be a physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse (APRN). All inpatients are under the care of one of these licensed providers, and hospitals use a uniform credentialing form. When an APRN is attending, a physician is available at all times for consultation. The law also clarifies who counts as an APRN, physician, patient, and hospital.
Signed hospital records kept 10 years
Hospitals compile a professional case record for every patient. Your attending physician, physician assistant, or APRN signs it. The hospital keeps your record for at least 10 years. This helps you and your next providers access your history after you leave.
