New timeline for charter school approvals

Authorizers must tell an applicant within 30 days if the application is complete and explain why if not. After an application is found complete, a public hearing is held within 60 days and the review includes an in-person interview. The authorizer must approve or deny the application 90 to 120 days after receiving it. For a school conversion, approval requires teacher and parent support at the levels set in state law. Before approval, the authorizer adopts the charter’s terms. These rules apply to new applications filed on or after the law’s effective date, and the law takes effect immediately.
