New state wildfire teams and funding

Beginning April 1, 2026, the state forestry program adds 24 positions to build two wildfire suppression modules. Four jobs are full-time regional fire managers and suppression module leaders. Four are nine-month full-time jobs, and sixteen are six-month full-time jobs. The law appropriates $5,144,000 from the general fund to the Office of State Lands and Investments. The money pays for these jobs, equipment, and hiring, training, certifying, and supervising two specialized teams. The teams support wildfire suppression and hazardous fuels reduction across the state. The funds are restricted to this purpose and cannot be used for other needs. Money is available through June 30, 2028, and any unused funds revert then. The legislature intends these positions be added to the office’s next standard biennial budget, but $1,000,000 of this appropriation is not added to that budget.
