State adds $3.5M for forest health grants

The law creates a Forest Health Grant Program Account. Money can come from the state, donations, and transfers; interest stays in the account and funds do not lapse. The state puts $3.5 million into the account for this program. The money can be used only for this program unless lawmakers approve another use.

Forest health grants for nonprofits and governments

The law creates the Wyoming Forest Health Grant Program run by the state forester. Only nonprofit and government groups can apply. Projects must serve the public and improve water yield or quality, cut wildfire risk, boost forest products, or improve wildlife or livestock habitat. The state forester can also approve other forest health projects with a clear public purpose. Each grant needs review and approval by the Wyoming attorney general, and the state forester must report by September 1 each year on grant amounts and funded projects.

Grants cover up to 75% of costs

Grants can pay up to 75% of an eligible project’s cost. The rest must come from matching funds, which can be cash or in-kind. For projects on federal land, grants can pay up to 50%. For good neighbor authority projects, receipts from the project can count as matching funds.
