New rules for involuntary mental health exams

Courts must appoint one or more examiners and get a written report on the person’s history and mental illness. The exam must happen within seven days of the court’s notice. It can take place in a hospital, clinic, the person’s home, or another safe location. Qualified examiners include licensed physicians, psychiatrists, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants with psychiatric training, and psychologists. If someone else does the exam, the court must appoint one of those professionals to review the findings. Beginning July 1, 2026, these rules apply in Wyoming involuntary hospitalization cases.
