Beginning July 1, 2026, Wyoming high school athletes must be amateurs to play in sports or activities run by the Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA). A student loses amateur status if paid to compete, takes prizes above WHSAA limits, profits from their name, image, or likeness, or signs a pro contract in that sport. Signing a college letter of intent is allowed if no pay is received while still participating. Breaking these rules makes the student ineligible in that sport or activity.
Beginning July 1, 2026, some support does not end a student’s amateur status. Family members can give money to encourage participation. Students can get limited pay for time at non‑WHSAA events, camps, or competitions, up to WHSAA limits. Before any event with prize money, the student and parent must file a written promise to refuse prize money. Pay cannot be tied to place or performance, and no pay is allowed for WHSAA events or for playing for a Wyoming high school. Meals, travel, small fees for coaching or officiating kids, school‑paid memberships or fees, awards within WHSAA limits, team‑wide noncash Olympic benefits, Operation Gold funds, unpaid school or charity fundraisers, and college scholarships paid directly to the school after graduation are all allowed.
