Summary

The Department of Defense can pay a hiring bonus to someone who takes a job at a place the Secretary of Defense finds hard to staff because it is remote, isolated, or has extreme climate. The bonus cannot be more than 25 percent of the person’s yearly basic pay multiplied by the number of years they agree to serve (including parts of years), and that service period can be no more than four years. The worker must sign an agreement with the Secretary of Defense to stay at the location for the agreed time. The agreement can require repayment or other work if the person fails to complete the agreed service. The authority to pay these bonuses expired on September 30, 2022.
