Summary

The Secretary of Energy must set up a tritium production program that can provide the tritium needed for U.S. nuclear weapons. Any new Department of Energy tritium production facility must be located at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. The Secretary may also run tests of tritium target rods inside reactors as part of the commercial light water reactor program.

Title 10, §6141

(a)The Secretary of Energy shall establish a tritium production program that is capable of meeting the tritium requirements of the United States for nuclear weapons.
(b)The Secretary shall locate any new tritium production facility of the Department of Energy at the Savannah River Site, South Carolina.
(c)The Secretary may perform in-reactor tests of tritium target rods as part of the activities carried out under the commercial light water reactor program.
