The Secretary of Energy can give a certificate of commendation to current or former Department of Energy employees, and to current or former employees of DOE contractors, whose work on stockpile stewardship and security helped advance U.S. national security. The certificate must describe the person’s service and note their dedication, intellect, and sacrifice in keeping a strong, safe, and viable U.S. nuclear deterrent during the Cold War or afterward. “Department of Energy” also includes any agency that came before it.
