The Army must have a Chief of the Dental Corps who is an officer appointed under section 3039. Under rules set by the Secretary of the Army, the Chief must run all Army dental work and handle all dental matters. The Chief must set dental standards and policies, and recommend actions on organization, staffing, promotion, training, assignments, and transfers. The Chief also advises the Office of the Surgeon General. Dental personnel are placed in units led by an Army Medical Department officer who reports to local commanders on professional, technical, and required administrative matters.
