The Commandant may give tuition help to eligible Coast Guard spouses when money is available. The help can pay for education that leads to a degree or credential at an accredited U.S. college, university, or technical school, or for required courses and a professional license or credential a government or licensing board requires for a job that improves employment or portable career options. Eligible spouse: the spouse of an active‑duty Coast Guard member, including a spouse receiving transitional compensation under section 1059 of title 10, but not a spouse who is legally separated by court order or statute or someone already eligible for tuition help as a service member. Portable career: a job that needs education or training that results in a credential recognized by an industry, profession, or type of business.
