§3742 Establishment of promotion zones under running mate system

Title 14 › Subtitle SUBTITLE III— - COAST GUARD RESERVE AND AUXILIARY › Chapter CHAPTER 37— - COAST GUARD RESERVE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - PERSONNEL › § 3742

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

The Secretary can make rules so that promotion zones for active Reservists are set by a "running mate" system. Under that system, a Reserve officer is put into a promotion zone when that officer’s running mate is put in one, and is considered for promotion at about the same time as the running mate or as soon as possible. If the running mate system is not used, an officer becomes eligible for promotion consideration at the start of the promotion year in which they complete, from their date of rank: 2 years as lieutenant (junior grade); 3 years as lieutenant; 4 years as lieutenant commander; 4 years as commander; and 3 years as captain. If the Secretary allows picking officers from below the promotion zone, the number taken from below the zone can be set by using the running mate system or by other methods the Secretary decides are needed for the Coast Guard.
