You cannot sell, offer, display for sale, or ship a barrel of fruit, vegetables, or other dry goods that holds less than the standard third, half, or three‑quarters barrel in any State, Territory, or the District of Columbia, or ship such a barrel from any of those places to another or to a foreign country. If someone knowingly breaks these rules, they can be charged with a misdemeanor and fined up to $500 or jailed up to six months in a federal court. Barrels made to a foreign buyer’s specifications and not illegal in the destination country are not treated as below standard when shipped abroad.
