Title 16 › Chapter CHAPTER 1— - NATIONAL PARKS, MILITARY PARKS, MONUMENTS, AND SEASHORES › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER LIX–G— - CHACO CULTURE NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK › § 410ii
Congress found that recent archaeological work in the San Juan Basin has taught the public a lot about the prehistoric Chacoan Anasazi. These finds came while the area was being developed for coal, uranium, oil, and natural gas. Congress said protecting the archaeological sites will not hurt development or valid existing private property rights. Because the Chacoan sites are important to the nation and need quick protection, federal agencies and private companies must keep working together so development can continue in ways that protect the sites and allow research. The law’s purpose is to recognize these special Chacoan archaeological resources, to protect and explain them to the public, and to support ongoing research.
