Summary

The Secretary of the Interior must acquire, for the United States, the birthplace site of George Washington Carver near Diamond, Missouri. The Secretary can accept the land as a gift, buy it, and take any nearby land or buildings needed to carry out the purposes of sections 450aa to 450aa–2; if a fair price cannot be reached, the Secretary may take the property through the government’s legal process for taking private land.

The Secretary of the Interior is authorized and directed to acquire, on behalf of the United States, by gift or purchase, the site of the birthplace of George Washington Carver, distinguished Negro scientist, located near Diamond, Missouri, together with such additional land or interests in land and any improvements thereon as the Secretary may deem necessary to carry out the purposes of sections 450aa to 450aa–2 of this title. In the event the Secretary is unable to acquire such property, or any part thereof, at a reasonable price, he is authorized and directed to condemn such property, or any part thereof, in the manner provided by law.

Authorization of Appropriations section 4 of act July 14, 1943, as amended Sept. 9, 1950, ch. 940, 64 Stat. 829, provided that: “There are authorized to be appropriated such sums not to exceed $150,000 as may be necessary to carry out the provisions of this Act [sections 450aa to 450aa–2 of this title].”
