The Secretary of the Interior may create and run the Gulf Islands National Seashore to protect places with important natural, historic, and recreational value and to keep them open for the public to use and enjoy. The seashore includes the Gulf Coast islands and nearby waters shown on the December 1970 map titled "Proposed Boundary Plan, Proposed Gulf Islands National Seashore" (map no. NS–GI–7100J): Ship, Petit Bois, and Horn Islands in Mississippi; and in Florida the eastern part of Perdido Key, Santa Rosa Island, the Naval Live Oaks Reservation, Fort Pickens and Fort Pickens State Park, and a piece of land at Pensacola Naval Air Station that includes the Coast Guard Station and Lighthouse, Fort San Carlos, Fort Barrancas, and Fort Redoubt. When the Secretary acquires it, the seashore will also include about 2,000 acres on Cat Island, Mississippi, shown on the "Boundary Map, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Cat Island, Mississippi" (map no. 635/80085, dated November 9, 1999). That Cat Island map must be kept on file and be available for the public to see at the proper National Park Service offices.
