Title 16 › Chapter CHAPTER 80— - NEOTROPICAL MIGRATORY BIRD CONSERVATION › § 6101
Says nearly 800 bird species occur in the United States and about 500 of them migrate between countries. Most of those, called neotropical migrants, breed in the U.S. and Canada and spend winters in Latin America and the Caribbean. These birds give environmental, economic, recreational, and aesthetic benefits, but many populations are falling—some to dangerous levels—mainly because of habitat loss and damage, including pollution and contamination. Because they cross many borders, protecting them needs commitment from all countries on their routes and better coordination of conservation efforts.
