Title 18 › Part PART II— - CRIMINAL PROCEDURE › Chapter CHAPTER 229— - POSTSENTENCE ADMINISTRATION › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER A— - PROBATION › § 3603
Probation officers must tell each person on probation or supervised release what the court ordered and give them a written copy of those conditions. They must watch the person's behavior and situation as the court requires and tell the sentencing court about it. They must try to help the person improve, using any appropriate methods that do not conflict with the court’s conditions. Officers are responsible for supervising people who are in their judicial district, must keep records of their work, and must send reports to the Director of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts as requested. Officers must help the Attorney General or the Attorney General’s designee when asked for people on work release, furlough, or prerelease custody under section 3624(c). They must monitor payment of fines or restitution and report failures to pay within thirty days after notice so the court can consider revocation. When the court orders, officers must supervise and report on people released under sections 4243, 4246, or 4248, and they must immediately tell the court and the Attorney General about any violations. With district court approval and under rules from the Administrative Office Director, officers may carry firearms. Officers must also perform any other duties the court assigns.
