It is a crime to knowingly and on purpose mail, deliver, or otherwise make a threat to kill, kidnap, or hurt the President, the President-elect, the Vice President, the Vice President-elect, or the person next in line to be President. If convicted, a person can be fined under federal law, imprisoned for not more than five years, or both. President-elect and Vice President-elect: the people who appear to have won the general election that determines the presidential electors under federal law. Other officer next in the order of succession: the person next in line to act as President under federal law (Title 3, sections 19 and 20).
