Title 18 › Part PART I— - CRIMES › Chapter CHAPTER 41— - EXTORTION AND THREATS › § 879
It is a crime to knowingly and on purpose threaten to kill, kidnap, or hurt certain protected people. That includes a former President and their immediate family, the immediate family of the President, President‑elect, Vice President, or Vice President‑elect, a major candidate for President or Vice President and that candidate’s immediate family, and anyone the Secret Service protects under section 3056(a)(6). “Immediate family” has two meanings here. For a former President it means the spouse during the former President’s life, the surviving spouse until death or remarriage, and minor children until they are 16 years old. For the President, President‑elect, Vice President, Vice President‑elect, or a major candidate it means someone related by blood, marriage, or adoption, or someone who acts like a parent. “Major candidate” is the one named in section 3056(a)(7). “President‑elect” and “Vice President‑elect” are defined in section 871(b).
