School districts may use these funds for seven types of activities that help at-risk students stay in school and finish their education. Examples include programs for kids returning from juvenile or correctional facilities, dropout-prevention, coordinating health and social services (like day care, drug and alcohol counseling, and mental health help), special academic and career programs (including special education and help getting student aid), mentoring and peer mediation, programs for at-risk Indian children, and pay-for-success projects. A district can run these activities itself or pay others by giving subgrants, using contracts, or making cooperative agreements.
