Summary

Employees of the Department who work in certain U.S. territories can get a cost-of-living allowance to help pay for their dependents’ education. The amount cannot be more than the education allowance the Secretary of Defense sets for that place, and it only applies where the Secretary of Defense finds local schools can’t adequately educate children of service members or Department of Defense employees.

Title 22, §2701a

(a)An individual employed by the Department at a location described in subsection (b) shall be eligible for a cost-of-living allowance for the education of the dependents of such employee in an amount that does not exceed the educational allowance authorized by the Secretary of Defense for such location.
(b)A location is described in this subsection if—
(1)such location is in a territory of the United States; and
(2)the Secretary of Defense has determined that schools available in such location are unable to adequately provide for the education of—
(A)dependents of members of the Armed Forces; or
(B)dependents of employees of the Department of Defense.
