Title 22 › Chapter CHAPTER 52— - FOREIGN SERVICE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER IX— - TRAVEL, LEAVE, AND OTHER BENEFITS › § 4081a

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

The Department of State, USAID, and other U.S. government staff under a chief of mission can pay a foreign airline to carry them, their baggage, and up to 3 pets when no U.S. airline that has the certificate under section 41102 is willing and able to transport those animals. This can be for travel into the United States, out of the United States, or between two places outside the United States. The amount paid to the foreign carrier cannot be more than what would have been paid to the U.S. carrier. If the foreign fare is higher, Department personnel may pay the extra cost. A "domestic animal" here means a dog or a cat.
