Summary

The Secretary, through the Service, can give grants to public or private nursing schools to start and run clinics that meet health needs of Indians and provide primary care to Indians who live on or within 50 miles of Indian country. Grants can pay to set up clinics run by faculty and students, support clinical training, improve programs and faculty, provide student scholarships, or pay for other activities the Secretary approves. Clinics must give nursing students a structured clinical experience like a physician residency. The Secretary sets grant amounts, conditions, and rules. For each fiscal year 1993 through 2000, no more than $5,000,000 from the subchapter’s funds may be used for these grants.
