Title 25 › Chapter CHAPTER 12— - LEASE, SALE, OR SURRENDER OF ALLOTTED OR UNALLOTTED LANDS › § 396g
The Secretary of the Interior may approve leases to store oil or gas underground on lands covered by sections 396 or 396a, no matter where the oil or gas was first produced. He can also change or extend existing oil, gas, or other mining leases on restricted Indian lands and make rules to allow that storage. Those leases can require a storage fee, rent, or a different royalty when the stored oil or gas is later produced. A lease that allows storage can continue for the storage period and for as long afterward as unproduced oil or gas is produced in paying quantities.
