Title 28 › Part PART IV— - JURISDICTION AND VENUE › Chapter CHAPTER 85— - DISTRICT COURTS; JURISDICTION › § 1335
Federal district courts must hear a lawsuit when a person, business, or group is holding money, property, or a note, bond, insurance policy, or similar instrument worth $500 or more, or owes an obligation of $500 or more, and two or more people from different states (as defined in section 1332) claim they are entitled to it. The holder must either put the money or property into the court’s registry or give a bond to the court clerk that a judge approves, promising to follow the court’s future order. The court can hear the case even if the conflicting claims do not come from the same source, as long as the claims are against each other and independent.
